Savannah Pride Center calls for police to investigate deadly shooting as hate crime

Chris Allen Villegas Fentress was killed last weekend at the Dollar General on West Bay Street

The Savannah Pride Center is asking the police department to investigate the deadly shooting of one of their volunteers and members as a hate crime.

Last Sunday, Chris Allen Villegas Fentress was shot and killed inside the Dollar General on West Bay Street in Savannah.

The Pride Center says Villegas Fentress was subjected to anti-LGBTQ+ slurs before being shot. Despite that information being shared with police, Savannah Pride Center says police aren't investigating the death as a hate crime.

In their statement, shared on Facebook Sunday, the Pride Center says Villegas Fentress had moved to the Hostess City with his partner, Oscar, two years ago.

But, they say, "This incident has intensified existing fears within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly as Savannah confronts escalating gun violence. The brazen nature of this crime, occurring in a public space during daylight hours, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents."

The suspected shooter, 27-year-old Jonathan Manson, was taken to jail and charged with murder.

WJCL 22 News has reached out to the Savannah Police Department, who says the facts don't align what with the group is asking for.
