Savannah native wins Super Bowl title in just second NFL season
Less than two years after being drafted in the first round by the Philadelphia Eagles, Savannah native Nolan Smith has won a Super Bowl title.
Smith helping lead the Eagles to a dominate 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LVII in New Orleans.
Nolan Smith and the Philadelphia defense held the Chiefs to 225 total yards and forced three turnovers, including a second-quarter Cooper DeJean interception that he returned for a touchdown.
The Eagles would also tally six quarterback sacks in the game.
Smith's rise to prominence is nothing short of remarkable. After starting the 2023 season as a backup, he emerged as a key defensive force for the Eagles, culminating in a Super Bowl berth against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Harold Nelson, a longtime friend and former coach of Smith, said he always knew the young player had the potential to succeed at the highest level — but even he couldn’t have predicted such rapid success.
"I envisioned him being successful in the NFL because of his work ethic, but I did not expect a Super Bowl in year two," Nelson said.
