MAGDEBURG, Germany (AP) — Five people were killed, including a 9-year-old, after a Saudi doctor drove into a Christmas market teeming with holiday shoppers in the German city of Magdeburg, officials said Saturday, as people mourned the victims and their shaken sense of security.
City official Ronni Krug didn’t provide further information on the adults killed in the attack on Friday night. He said 200 people were injured, of whom 41 were in serious or very serious condition.
Thi Linh Chi Nguyen, a 34-year-old manicurist from Vietnam — whose salon is located in a mall across the Christmas market — was on the phone during a break when she heard loud bangs and thought at first they were fireworks. She then saw a car drive through the market at high speed. People screamed and a child was thrown into the air by the car.
The woman recalled seeing the car bursting out of the market and turning right onto Ernst-Reuter-Allee street and then coming to a standstill at the tram stop where the suspect was arrested.
The market itself was still cordoned off Saturday with red-and-white tape and police vans every 50 meters (yards). Police with machine pistols guarded every entry to the market. Some thermal security blankets still lay on the street.
Prosecutors said the suspect, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, is under investigation on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and bodily harm.
Several German media outlets identified the suspect as Taleb A., withholding his last name in line with privacy laws, and reported that he was a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy. He has lived in Germany since 2006, practicing medicine in Bernburg, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Magdeburg. officials said.
Taleb’s X account describes him as a former Muslim. It is filled with tweets and retweets focusing on anti-Islam themes and criticism of the religion, while sharing congratulatory notes to Muslims who left the faith. He was critical of German authorities, saying they had failed to do enough to combat the “Islamism of Europe.” He has also voiced support for the far-right and anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Some described Taleb as an activist who helped Saudi women flee their homeland. Recently, he seemed focused on his theory that German authorities have been targeting Saudi asylum-seekers.
There were still no answers Saturday as to what motivated the man to drive his black BMW into a crowd in the eastern German city.
Prosecutors said the motive may have been “dissatisfaction with the treatment of Saudi refugees in Germany,” but investigators are still trying to get to the bottom of what was behind the attack.
Investigators have to analyze computers, mobile devices and other evidence, “and at the end of the day we will know, or at least hope to know, what drove him to this act.”
The violence shocked Germany and the city, prompting several other German towns to cancel their weekend Christmas markets as a precaution, and out of solidarity with Magdeburg’s loss. Berlin kept its markets open but has increased its police presence at them.
Germany has suffered a string of extremist attacks in recent years, including a knife attack that killed three people and wounded eight at a festival in the western city of Solingen in August. Those attacks have led cities to beef up security at Christmas markets and other events.
Friday’s attack came eight years after an Islamic extremist drove a truck into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, killing 13 people and injuring many others. The attacker was killed days later in a shootout in Italy.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Another new Littoral Combat Ship joined the fleet at Naval Station Mayport.
The Navy’s latest Freedom-variant LCS, the USS Beloit (LCS 29), arrived in its new homeport on Thursday.
It joins the recent additions of the USS John Basilone, the Navy’s latest missile destroyer, and the USS Nantucket, another LCS.
The USS Beloit was commissioned on Nov. 23 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
It’s the 15th Freedom-variant LCS in the Navy’s fleet and the first vessel to carry the Beloit name. Its name honors the city of Beloit, Wisconsin, and recognizes the community’s contributions to the Navy, including the engines manufactured by Fairbanks Morse Defense, which power numerous naval vessels, including Freedom-variant ships and Ford-class aircraft carriers.
Two people waiting for loved ones to come off the ship were mom and daughter Valerie and Hope Antoine. Both hadn’t seen John, Valerie’s husband and Hope’s dad, in months.
“We’ve had a lot of holidays, anniversaries and birthdays away from each other,” Valerie Antoine said. “We just appreciate the time frame that they executed their mission, to get here. I know what it takes for them to meet deadline and I appreciate all of the sailors that made it possible to be here on this pier today.”
John said he was excited to be home because there was a lot of anticipation.
“Everybody was just ready to get home,” he said.
The ship’s commander, LeAndra Kissinger, said they will add so much to Mayport.
“Stability,” Kissinger said. “War-fighting readiness, because we’re warfighters and we’re ready to get our ship out there and deploy.”
Valerie Antoine said in addition to celebrating the holidays, they’ll also be celebrating her husband’s birthday, which happened while he was away.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — With less than a week to go until Christmas, Amazon workers at several facilities around the country were initiating a strike Thursday morning.
It was due to begin at 6 a.m., and picketers could be seen on the ground in New York.
11Alive crews were outside Amazon's metro Atlanta delivery facility in Alpharetta early in the morning, and picketing began after 9 a.m.

According to a statement, the Teamsters union represents nearly 10,000 Amazon workers at ten facilities throughout the U.S. The Atlanta facility is among eight of those locations that have authorized strikes. The union said the strike would be the largest in American history and aimed to highlight poor working conditions and low pay.
“Amazon is one of the biggest, richest corporations in the world,” said Gabriel Irizarry, a driver at DIL7 in Skokie, Ill. “They talk a big game about taking care of their workers, but when it comes down to it, Amazon does not respect us and our right to negotiate for better working conditions and wages. We can’t even afford to pay our bills.”
Amazon has pushed back against the union’s claims, stating that the workers involved are not its employees.
“For more than a year now, the Teamsters have continued to intentionally mislead the public – claiming that they represent ‘thousands of Amazon employees and drivers.' They don’t, and this is another attempt to push a false narrative about the independent small businesses who deliver on our behalf," Amazon Spokesperson Eileen Hards said.
The Teamsters also refuted that statement, saying the company "cannot fool the American public into believing drivers delivering Amazon packages in Amazon-branded vans don’t actually work for Amazon."
As recently as September, the union voted to approve a tentative contract agreement with UPS, according to AP Business Writer Michaelle Chapman. The deal came after "contentious labor negotiations that threatened to disrupt package deliveries for millions of businesses and households nationwide."
“If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “These greedy executives had every chance to show decency and respect for the people who make their obscene profits possible. Instead, they’ve pushed workers to the limit and now they’re paying the price. This strike is on them.”
Amazon has maintained that its delivery operations will continue without interruption, citing its extensive network of independent contractors. Details about the strike’s potential impact on customers or specific delivery hubs remain unclear.
“What we’re doing is historic,” said Leah Pensler, a warehouse worker at DCK6 in San Francisco. “We are fighting against a vicious union-busting campaign, and we are going to win.”
