Family speaks out after missing sailor from NAS Jax found dead in Georgia river

ATLANTA, Ga. — The family of a 25-year-old Navy sailor stationed at NAS Jax is looking for answers after his body was found in a Georgia river Thursday. Action News Jax’s Atlanta station WSB-TV talked to the family of Devin Jeter saying he dedicated his life to service.

On Monday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a fisherman found Jeter’s body along the Ocmulgee River near Lumber City, Ga.

Jeter was the youngest of six siblings and followed two of his sisters and an older brother into the military shortly after he graduated from Druid Hills High School in Atlanta.

Jeter’s enlisted in the Navy and served in Japan before he was recently redeployed to NAS Jax a few months ago, his family told WSB-TV.

“(He was) a caring, thoughtful person who enjoyed life, and he was always a happy person,” Debra Smith, Jeter’s great aunt said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - — The family of Ronald Mathews speaks out for the first time following tragic death of security guard in Jacksonville shooting.

Ronald Matthews, a 28-year-old security guard, was killed in a shooting at an adult arcade in Jacksonville’s Paxon neighborhood on Thursday, October 3. For the first time since the tragedy, Ronald’s family spoke only to Action News Jax about the profound impact of his loss and the kind of person he was.

“It just wasn’t real,” Jada Matthews, Ronald’s twin sister, said. “This tragedy was just gut-wrenching because of the type of person he was.”

Jada recounted the bond she shared with her brother.

Police say the dog's owner was grazed by a "fragment" of something and will be okay. The officer is also expected to recover fully.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A heavy police presence was blocking off parts of College Road in the Riverside area of Jacksonville Friday afternoon. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has now confirmed the incident involved an officer who shot a dog while responding to a call.

JSO was responding to a call that came in at 2:30 p.m. The caller was a woman who reported she was involved in an altercation with another woman and she was armed.
