‘It just wasn’t real:’ Family of Jacksonville security guard speaks out following tragic death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - — The family of Ronald Mathews speaks out for the first time following tragic death of security guard in Jacksonville shooting.

Ronald Matthews, a 28-year-old security guard, was killed in a shooting at an adult arcade in Jacksonville’s Paxon neighborhood on Thursday, October 3. For the first time since the tragedy, Ronald’s family spoke only to Action News Jax about the profound impact of his loss and the kind of person he was.

“It just wasn’t real,” Jada Matthews, Ronald’s twin sister, said. “This tragedy was just gut-wrenching because of the type of person he was.”

Jada recounted the bond she shared with her brother.

Police say the dog's owner was grazed by a "fragment" of something and will be okay. The officer is also expected to recover fully.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A heavy police presence was blocking off parts of College Road in the Riverside area of Jacksonville Friday afternoon. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has now confirmed the incident involved an officer who shot a dog while responding to a call.

JSO was responding to a call that came in at 2:30 p.m. The caller was a woman who reported she was involved in an altercation with another woman and she was armed.
